TIPS & Tricks on lifestyle sessions

What to Wear
For engagement sessions, family sessions, maternity, newborn - basically all Lifestyle sessions, a HUGE factor to keep in mind for photos you'll love forever is what you wear. Clients ask me all the time for advice on what to wear & I'll always suggest neutrals or pick 1 accent colour.
An idea for your engagement photos to try to keep the balance of engagement photos to wedding photos cohesive, wear those colours. If your wedding colours are olive green, blush pink, & white, maybe decide to wear one of those colours in a dress or pants!
Neutral tones are always the best. Try and avoid loud patterns or mix matched patterns. Just think simple, clean & neutral.
At the end of the day, dress comfortably and for the weather / location.

When planning your engagement, maternity or family session, thinking of a location can be tricky. Outdoors comes with weather, indoor comes with low natural light. However, us photogs are ready to suit up for any location you're interested in!
For outdoors, shade is important (especially if we end up on a sunny day) As a light & airy photographer, I actually dislike shooting in direct afternoon (1-4pm typically) sunlight and will always shift the sessions to be in shade. Whether thats under the shade of a tree or building, its just going to be the best lighting option for skin tones & no harsh shadows.
For early evening - golden hour, the sun is close enough to the horizon that those harsh shadows are blurred out more & much more manageable. Its a small window, but sunrise and sunset are some of the most beautiful times to shoot!
For indoor sessions (nursery, in-home sessions), having as much natural light as possible is super important. I do have portable studio lights that I can bring to in-home sessions (no flash photography around babies!!!) Also for indoor sessions, the less background clutter, the better. A simple space where you & your family are the focus and eyes won't wander to the background is so key for timeless photos.
Props
Lifestyle sessions are a vast category of session. Whether its just the two of you, or 40 people celebrating a birthday, having props to represent what you're celebrating is a great idea!
I'm just going to create a list of general props that can be used for multiple celebrations. However, if you have anything you think would work for your session, always ask to include it! Anything special / custom is always welcome!
Another idea for your session is imagine a story, movie or scene that you loved & use that as your muse when coming up ideas for your session! If you're both into Star Wars, how about lightsabers?!
